TLDR: If you switch from ChatGPT to Claude doesn’t mean starting over. Your custom GPTs are just instructions and files… and your ChatGPT memory is just asummary of your preferences. All of it is portable. To migrate, ask ChatGPT to export a persona guide as a Markdown file, copy your custom GPT instructions and knowledge files, then paste everything into a Claude Project. The whole process takes about 15 minutes. Even better… you can replicate your setup across Claude, Gemini, AND ChatGPT so you’re never locked into one platform again. This post walks you through every step with the exact prompts to use.
You didn’t marry ChatGPT.
I know that sounds obvious… but the way some people talk about “switching” AI platforms, you’d think they were filing for divorce.
“But I’ve TRAINED it.”
“It knows my voice.”
“I can’t start over.”
Let me lovingly push back on all of that.
Because here’s what’s really happening… you’ve confused the TOOL with the TALENT. And the talent? That’s you.

Why I Use ChatGPT, Claude, AND Gemini (And Why You Should Too)
I’m going to be real with you…
When I first realized I was going to be operating across ChatGPT, Claude, AND Gemini… I won’t lie, it felt like a LOT.
Three platforms? Three subscriptions? Three different interfaces?
But here’s what I figured out FAST…
Each one of these tools has different strengths. ChatGPT is incredible for brainstorming and ideation. Claude is a powerhouse for deep thinking and nuanced writing. Gemini integrates beautifully with Google’s ecosystem. They each bring something different to the table.
And when I stopped thinking of them as “homes” and started thinking of them as TOOLS IN MY TOOLBOX… everything changed. For me, it wasn’t switching from ChatGPT to Claude; it was being diverse in my Ai symphony.
So what did I do?
I literally had my VA go into every single one of my custom GPTs… pull out all the instructions… download all the knowledge files… and replicate them across all three platforms.
She put them into Claude as Projects. She put them into Gemini as Gems. And just like that… no matter which tool I pick up on any given day, it has the SAME knowledge. The SAME instructions. The SAME understanding of how I work.
It took a couple hours. Not a couple months.
And now? I’m platform-agnostic. I go where the best output is for THAT specific task. That’s the kind of flexibility that gives you an edge most people don’t even know exists.
But What If You Can Only Pick One Right Now?
I get it.
Not everyone can (or wants to) pay for three separate AI subscriptions. That’s totally fair.
If budget is tight and you’re in a one-or-the-other situation… then this walkthrough to switch from ChatGPT to Claude is absolutely for you.
BUT… before we get into the how-to, let me drop my disclaimer here…
You REALLY should be expanding your AI literacy across multiple models. Not just picking one and calling it a day. The more models you understand, the better you get at prompting ALL of them. Your skills become portable. Your thinking becomes sharper.
That’s exactly why I recommend tools like Magai to my clients. You get access to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and 50+ other AI models… all in one place… for the cost of a single subscription. It’s hands-down the fastest way to level up your AI skills without draining your bank account every month.
(Seriously… if you haven’t checked it out, go look. It’s a game-changer for anyone who wants to stop limiting themselves to just one model.)
OK… disclaimer delivered. Now let’s get into the actual migration.

How to Move Your AI “Brain” So You Can Switch From ChatGPT to Claude (Step by Step)
Nobody tells you this about ChatGPT’s memory and your custom GPTs…
They’re not magic. They’re just TEXT.
Instructions.
Files.
Preferences.
That’s it.
And ALL of that is portable. You just need to know how to export it. So here is how you do it if you want to switch from ChatGPT to Claude:
Step 1: Get Your Master Blueprint
Open a brand new chat in ChatGPT and give it this prompt:
“I want you to create a comprehensive persona guide based on everything you know about me. Include my writing style, tone preferences, project frameworks, work habits, communication style, industry knowledge, and any recurring themes or instructions I’ve given you. Format this as a detailed reference document that I can use to onboard a new AI assistant.”
ChatGPT (or any Ai) will pull from its memory and give you a surprisingly thorough document. This is your Source of Truth.
Now here’s the important part…
Ask ChatGPT to give you this as a Markdown file. Not a Google Doc. Not a Word doc. A Markdown file (it’ll have a .md extension).
Why Markdown? Because it’s the universal language that ALL AI platforms read natively. It’s lightweight, clean, and doesn’t carry over any weird formatting that can confuse a different AI model. Think of it as the difference between handing someone a neatly typed letter versus a crumpled sticky note covered in highlighter. Markdown keeps everything clean and readable for any AI you feed it to.
Here’s the prompt to get your Markdown file:
“Now take everything you just created and format it as a clean Markdown document. Use proper headers, bullet points, and sections. Give me the file so I can download it.”
Step 2: Export Your Custom GPTs
This is the part that scares people for NO reason.
Your custom GPTs are literally just two things… instructions and uploaded files. That’s it. There’s no secret sauce. There’s no proprietary AI magic happening behind the scenes.
Here’s how to grab them:
Open any custom GPT you’ve built. Click the three dots or “Edit” button to open the configuration panel. You’ll see your instructions right there… copy them into a document (again, Markdown is ideal). If you uploaded knowledge files (PDFs, docs, spreadsheets), download every single one.
Do this for EVERY custom GPT you’ve built. It takes about 30 seconds per GPT.
Here’s a prompt to help you organize everything:
“I’m migrating my AI setup to a new platform. Help me create an organized inventory of this GPT’s configuration. List the core instructions, the uploaded knowledge files, and any specific behaviors or rules I’ve set up. Format as Markdown.”

Step 3: Build Your Claude Project
Now here’s where it all comes together.
In Claude, go to your dashboard and create a new Project. Think of a Project like a custom GPT… but honestly, better organized.
Here’s what you do:
Paste your Source of Truth (that persona guide from Step 1) directly into the Project Instructions. This tells Claude WHO you are, HOW you work, and WHAT you expect. Then upload all your knowledge files into the Project’s file collection. Claude can reference these anytime you chat within that Project.
That’s it. You just rebuilt months of “training” in about 15 minutes.
And if you want to get extra strategic about it…
“Here are my custom instructions and knowledge files from my previous AI setup. Review everything and suggest how to optimize the instructions for this platform. Flag anything that might need to be adjusted for how you process information differently.”
Feed that prompt to Claude INSIDE your new Project and watch it help you fine-tune the setup.
Bonus Step: Do the Same Thing in Gemini
If you want to go full multi-platform like I did…
In Google Gemini, you can create a Gem (Google’s version of a custom GPT). Drop your same instructions in there. Upload your same files. Done.
Now you’ve got your brain replicated across THREE platforms. You’re not locked in anywhere. You go where the best work happens.
This Is NOT Like Switching From Apple to Android
Let’s kill this comparison right now because I hear it ALL the time.
“Switching AI platforms is like switching from iPhone to Android.”
No. It’s not. Not even close.
When you switch phones, you’re changing your ENTIRE ecosystem. Your apps, your muscle memory, your accessories, your whole daily workflow… it’s a massive disruption.
Switching AI platforms? You’re literally just opening a different browser tab.
The interface might look a little different. The button might be in a different spot. But the WORK is the same. YOUR brain is the same. Your strategy doesn’t change just because you typed your prompt into a different text box.
This is the mindset shift that changes everything…

Genuinely leveraging it to transform their business.
And you don’t have to figure it out alone.
This is literally what I do. I help busy business owners cut through the noise, build real AI systems, and stop wasting time on the wrong things. I’ve been in the trenches with AI implementation since before it was trendy… and I can tell you from experience that the people who win with AI are the ones who stay curious, stay flexible, and surround themselves with people who are a few steps ahead of them.
(That’s me waving at you, by the way.)
What To Do Right Now If You Want to Switch From ChatGPT to Claude
If you’ve been sitting on the fence about exploring Claude, or Gemini, or ANY other AI platform because you’re afraid of “losing” what you’ve built…
Stop. Overthinking. It.
Here’s your action plan:
- Export your ChatGPT memory using the prompt I gave you above.
- Pull your custom GPT instructions and files.
- Set up a Claude Project (or a Gemini Gem… or both).
- Give yourself permission to be a beginner again for about 15 minutes.
That’s it. That’s the whole migration.
And if you want someone to walk you through it, or you want to go deeper into building AI systems for hiring that actually save you 60-70% of your time…
Come hang out with me. I talk about this stuff every single week on my podcast, in my AI Lab sessions, and with the business owners I work with one-on-one.
Because the future doesn’t belong to people who picked the “right” AI platform.
It belongs to the people who learned how to THINK with AI… no matter which tool they’re holding.
Updated Just 24 Hours After I Published: Claude is NOT Messing Around…

A day after I posted this article, Claude published the easiest way for you to convert your “brain” to them.
All you need to do is go here and follow the prompts. Now, the downside to this is it is just the universal memory. Who you are, what you like, don’t like, how to write, and your preferences. Etc. The downside to this is that it isn’t bringing over your entire brain of your projects or GPTs.
As it says on the site, “Bring your preferences and context from other AI providers to Claude. With one copy-paste, Claude updates its memory and picks up right where you left off. Memory is available on all paid plans.”
I found that when I did this, there was actually a lot in my memory that wasn’t accurate or today. It was “old” memories. So it does still require a bit of auditing and isn’t as comprehensive as the method I showed you above.
